1200 Micrograms Drugs, Music & Magic / Computers (Hujaboy remix) TipWorld (UK) Big. Yes, big. This is not the time to dissect whether 1200 Mics are valid contributors to the evolution of electronic music. Psyreviews did this before, and whatever any of us thinks, this lot are here to stay and they know what they’re doing. As a result then, Drugs, Music & Magic is the latest stop-start guitarfest, the sort of thing that you know will get the dancefloors in Brazil pumping. It’s 1200 Mics doing what 1200 Mics do. It’s tight, it’s swirly, it’s got peaks, it breaks, it’s got a guitar, and then a couple of stabs of Survivor’s Eye Of The Tiger. And this is basically it: even 1200 Mics sound a little tired on this one, as though they’re going through the motions, like pastiches of themselves. The flute bit at the end is nice, but even so one would be hard-pressed to name a tune where the artist sounds quite so disenchanted with what they are doing than this. Luckily, Hujaboy’s remix of Computers picks things up on the flip – proof that the movement and the material form the original can be interesting and powerful with some different sounds thrown into the mix. The peak here is insane, and the drop is pure class on how this sort of thing should be done. It’s fullpower, make no mistake – and it could do with being a little longer - but Hujaboy’s characteristically intelligent approach shifts some frankly uninspiring original material into a new dimension. 6
